Many changes came to Connecticut as a result of a new administration and newly elected legislature.  A new progressive caucus of approximately 45 legislators emerged hailing reforms, such as an increase to minimum wage, paid family medical leave, free college tuition, legalized marijuana, and capital gains taxes.  What did Connecticut’s struggling residents get instead?  A budget with many new sales taxes on products and services, increased taxes on meals and alcohol, and more taxes for small businesses

The Trust Act, Anything, but . . .

In 2013, Republicans and Democrats unanimously supported the implementation of the Trust Act, which created guidelines for how police handled arrests of illegal immigrants who were subject to federal civil detainers.  The law was established to create trust between local law enforcement officials and illegal immigrants so people in that community would be more willing to come forward without fear of deportation to report crimes or cooperate with police. HARTFORD—House Republicans late Friday voted against a mandatory payroll tax from Democrats and slammed majority party lawmakers desperate to appease their progressive base by installing a new government-run paid family and medical leave program before the legislative session ends next week.
