(PROSPECT) — On Monday, March 20th, State Representative Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) and Senator Rob Sampson (R-16) hosted a joint Town Hall Event to review recent bill proposals, legislative committee actions, and public hearing conclusions on a wide variety of issues. The event attracted roughly fifty concerned citizens from Prospect and the neighboring towns of Wolcott, Waterbury, Cheshire, and Southington.
Key topics addressed last night ranged from rising utility costs to election integrity, focusing also on aspects of the governor’s proposed budget that could potentially affect health care and University of Connecticut (UCONN) funding. Sen. Sampson and Rep. Zupkus also fielded general questions on the legislative process, highlighting how legislative committee work can make or break the future of any proposed bill.
“Sharing your voice is the strongest way to influence your state government,” said Rep. Zupkus during the Q&A session. “There have been so many dynamic opportunities to submit testimony and participate during public hearings, but its common for constituents to lose faith after coming in a few times. It’s imperative that you continue to come in and in large groups to make your voice known.”
“Aside from speaking in public hearings, we need to demonstrate our feelings in the polls,” added Sen. Sampson. “We can’t expect stable legislation if we don’t express our interests and desires at the polls. With the majority party overpowering the House and Senate minorities, it’s up to the voters to vocalize their concerns in public hearings, through contacting their elected officials, and always at the voting booth.”
