PROSPECT – In recognition of Women’s History Month, Rep. Lezlye Zupkus recently visited Long River Middle School in Prospect to congratulate Emma Ross and Ariella Raja, both sixth-grade students, who were winners of Rep. Zupkus’ essay contest.

The contest focused on “Important Women in Connecticut’s History and How Their Contributions to the State and Nation Affect Me.” Each student wrote about a notable woman, detailing their lives, accomplishments and what those contributions mean to them and Connecticut.

Emma, who came in first, chose to write about Hellen Keller, the American author and educator who advocated on behalf of the deaf and blind. Ariella, who came in second, focused her essay on Kristen Griest, one of the first two women who graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School.

Rep. Zupkus congratulated the students, presented them with a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, and gave a special thank you to their parents, Principal Derek Muharem and Language Arts teacher Raven Keaveney who are pictured above.
