Rep. Lezlye Zupkus, R-Prospect, recently visited several area schools as a guest reader for Read Across America week where she helped promote literacy and the joy of reading among students.

Rep. Zupkus visit Mrs. Hart’s 5th-grade class in Prospect Elementary School and Mrs. Morrisroe, Mrs. Parmelee, and Mrs. Orwick’s kindergarten classes in the Doolittle School in Cheshire. In Waterbury, she visited Maloney Elementary School where she spent time with Mrs. Siobhan Kalnins’ kindergarten class and read “What I Saw in the Teachers’ Lounge,” by Jerry Pallotta to a terrific group of students who were bright and engaged.

In Prospect, she read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Suess to and in Cheshire she read “Sheila Rae, the Brave,” by Kevin Henkes.

The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading. Dr. Seuss’ birthday was March 2 and was declared Read Across America Day, which kicks off Read Across America Week and Read Across America Month.
