Stafford – State Representative Kurt Vail (R-52) visited the Stafford Family Resource Center on Thursday, March 23, 2017, to experience how the program benefits many young families in the local community. The program provides afterschool care to prekindergarten students, in addition to a program for kindergarten and first grade students at the West Stafford School.

According to Vail, the Family Resource Center is facing a projected funding cut of 50% through the State Department of Education. Further, it is evident that the potential for additional cuts could lead to the elimination of the grant funding.

“The Stafford Family Resource Center (FRC) provides much more to the community than just child care, which is exemplified through its administration of learn and play groups, workshops on child behavior for parents, and other enrichment activities,” stated Vail.

Site Coordinator, Laura Lybarger, went on to explain, “Family Resource Center has been a great resource to the Stafford community for the last seventeen years. We provide many programs for families, including one-on-one parenting education in the home, developmental screenings for young children, and serve as a direct link to the public school system. We also collaborate with many other organizations in Stafford, filling any gaps ensuring that parents and children receive the services they need. A cut to our funding of this size would be devastating for families in Stafford. “

Parents within the community expressed what the program means to them.

“Overall, this is our future, right here, these children are the future. So why wouldn’t we invest in this, invest in the future to create happy and productive members of society. This program is so important, and it helps children and families from all different walks of life,” said David Garcia, a Stafford resident.
