Vail Supports Allocation of State Grants to Stafford, Somers

STAFFORD – According to State Rep. Kurt Vail (R-Stafford), both Stafford and Somers will be receiving a portion of an $11 million round of Small Town Economic Assistance (STEAP) grants. These grants are intended to provide economic relief to small towns by providing additional resources to complete local improvement projects.
“COVID-19 has had a tremendously negative impact on the budgets of small towns across the state. This is an important gesture by the State of Connecticut to ensure our small towns are supported in the midst of a pandemic. The resources going to both towns within the 52nd District will be used to complete significant projects in each community,” explained Rep. Vail.
Within this round of STEAP grant funding:
- Stafford will be receiving $128,000 for the replacement of the playground and basketball courts, field irrigation, and field house design at Olympic Field. This will be matched by $93,000 from the town.
- Somers will be receiving $71,000 to install a permanent generator at the town hall. This will be matched by $2,500 from the town.
Municipalities across the state can apply for STEAP grants. A project may be eligible for a grant if it is new construction, expansion, renovation, or replacement for an existing facility or facilities. However, there has not been an allocation of STEAP grants since 2016. Consequently, this round of grants was intended to help alleviate economic stress that small towns in Connecticut are facing as a result of the pandemic.
