SOMERS – State Representative Kurt Vail (R-52) put on his work boots and tool belt to help out the Caretakers of Soapstone Mountain with their rehabilitation project of the mountain’s observation tower and park area.
“The Caretakers of Soapstone Mountain have really taken the issue of restoring the observation tower, and the surrounding area, to heart. They’ve done a great job so far, raising private funds and gathering the necessary resources to adequately complete their plans to re-open the tower. I think more private-public partnerships could be extremely beneficial to our state parks across Connecticut,” said Rep. Vail.
History of the Mountain
Soapstone Mountain is tucked into the Shenipsit State Forest, which spans into Ellington, Somers and Stafford. The forest was opened in 1927, with the observation tower serving as a way to monitor the woodland areas of North-Central Connecticut. The original tower has long since been replaced, but the current tower has fallen into disrepair.
Rep. Vail said, “The Caretakers have a three-step plan to re-open the observation tower. Our greenspace serves as one of the greatest assets Connecticut has to offer, so I am absolutely supportive of this initiative.”
The Caretakers of Soapstone Mountain regularly host community events that directly support their goal of updating the observation tower. For more information you can visit them on Facebook @CaretakersOfSoapstone.
