Rep. Vail votes to protect youth from damaging concussions

HARTFORD — Rep. Kurt Vail, a member of the legislative public safety committee and longtime youth football coach, cosponsored H.B. 6722 Friday, which expands concussion awareness to youth and parents involved in youth athletics.
“We want to increase youth athletes’ and parents’ knowledge of concussions, so they can better understand the common brain injury – and curb any further youth-related incidents,” Vail (R-52) said. “This measure brings to light many concerns parents, students, coaches and community members had. It addresses symptoms, proper medical attention and the best-fit practices following an incident.”
This bill requires youth athletic activity operators – businesses, nonprofits or municipalities – to make an annual written or electronic statement on concussions available to every youth participating in a youth athletic activity and parents or legal guardians.
The organizer must make the statement available when the youth registers for the support and the statement must include information on concussion signs or symptom recognition; how to obtain proper medical treatment for someone suspected of sustaining a concussion; the nature of concussions and their risks, including the danger of continuing to engage in athletic activity after sustaining a concussion; and proper procedures for allowing the athlete who sustained a concussion to return to athletic activity.
The bill passed the House overwhelmingly and it now heads to the Senate.
