Rep. Vail Tours Somers Solar Center

SOMERS –Somers Solar Center is an innovative power plant over 50 rolling acres of land and serves as home to thousands of solar panels. This solar panel delivery system powers roughly 5,000 homes on an annual basis and is run by parent company, Dominion Energy. This is one of Dominion’s marquee projects in the Northeast stated Rep. Kurt Vail, who represents Somers and Stafford, after recently touring the facility.
The foundation for the center’s operations was born out of legislation passed by the General Assembly back in 2011. This legislation required that the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) solicit applications for renewable energy projects. In 2013 Dominion Energy acquired the project from Kyocera and began implementing energy delivery shortly thereafter.
The state of the art solar panels are the key to the operation. In order to maximize energy collection each row of panels can be rotated to face the sun at any given point during the day. This function is also important in the winter when snow clean up becomes cumbersome. Each set of panels can be angled to allow snow to melt off, without shoveling or deicing. Consequently, even in times of poor weather, there is very little maintenance involved with keeping the panels functional.
“The Somers Solar Center is an example of how legislation that we come up with can help support the basic infrastructure for cost effective, streamlined energy sources,” explained Rep. Vail. “The fact is, when solar energy is used the cost of energy consumption plummets for the consumer and has less of an impact on the environment.”
