Rep. Vail Reflects on Failed Veto Override Session

HARTFORD – Today the House of Representatives convened in order to reconsider legislation that has been vetoed by Governor Dannel P. Malloy. Of the bills vetoed by the governor, only one was called for reconsideration before the chamber during today’s session, H.B. 6977 – AN ACT ESTABLISHING QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION. The intent of this legislation is to establish qualifications, in order to better define the credentials of a potential candidate, in the appointment process for the Commissioner of Education.

During the override session the legislature has the opportunity to reaffirm the passage of the bill, but without the requisite two-thirds majority, today’s reconsideration of the bill failed. Only 83 members were present at today’s session, with 62 member’s casting votes in the affirmative. 101 votes are required to override a veto.

“This is disheartening to see, especially for our constituents” said Rep. Kurt Vail, “I am disappointed that a bill, which had bi-partisan support during the regular session, could not garner the same support today.”

The legislature is now adjourned until the beginning of the 2016 Legislative Session.
