Rep. Vail, GOP outline transportation plan

HARTFORD — State Rep. Kurt Vail (R-52) joined Republican lawmakers Tuesday in unveiling ‘Prioritize Progress,’ a comprehensive, long-term solution to Connecticut’s infrastructure needs.
The plan establishes a predictable and sustainable funding stream totaling at least $1 billion for the next 30 years and re-institutes the Transportation Strategy Board to aid the Department of Transportation in identifying community needs and prioritizing safety improvements. The plan includes no tax increases, no tolls and a reduction in the current level of state borrowing.
From the interstate system to rail and ports, Prioritize Progress creates a safer transportation network with a flexible, responsible spending outline.
“If we as a state want to focus on transportation, this is the best plan,” Vail said. “Our plan focuses on safer transportation systems and responsible spending – state government living within its means. This plan doesn’t raise taxes, doesn’t increase borrowing and doesn’t call for tolls. It’s a winner.”
For the past hundred-plus years, Connecticut has not had a truly reliable or foreseeable revenue stream for transportation. Prioritize Progress secures current funds, reprioritizes spending and gives experts the tools and resources they need to institute a broad range of transportation projects – including roads, bridges, rail, bus and ports.
The Republican plan will save Connecticut $305 million in debt services, while defining a 10-year horizon with an additional $5.3 billion to rebuild infrastructure systems.
