CTDOT Plans Roundabout Upgrade at Route 190 and Route 83 in Somers

SOMERS – The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is moving forward with plans to redesign the busy intersection of Route 190 and Route 83 in Somers, aiming to improve traffic flow, safety, and overall functionality for all roadway users. A major feature of the proposed project is the installation of a modern roundabout to replace the current signalized intersection.
What’s Changing?
The key improvement involves realigning Route 83 — specifically, shifting the southern approach (South Road) to align with the northern approach (Springfield Road). This change will eliminate the current 80-foot offset between the northbound and southbound approaches, a longstanding issue that has led to frequent crashes and long traffic backups.
Along with the realignment, a modern roundabout will be installed. Roundabouts have been shown to reduce both the frequency and severity of crashes compared to traditional intersections. They also help keep traffic moving more smoothly, especially during peak hours.
Why Now?
In October 2019, CTDOT installed a new traffic signal at the intersection, separating northbound and southbound traffic into individual signal phases in an attempt to address safety and congestion issues. While this reduced some conflict points, it significantly increased delays and did not help large vehicles — especially trucks — navigate the intersection more efficiently.
The new roundabout proposal addresses these lingering concerns by simplifying turning movements and reducing congestion. It also enhances pedestrian infrastructure, including new sidewalks and crosswalks, to make walking through Somers Center safer and more accessible.
