52nd District Fire Departments Awarded Volunteer Fire Capacity Grants

WOODSTOCK – Four local volunteer fire departments have been awarded 2024 Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Grants, administered through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Division of Forestry in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service.
These competitive, matching federal grants are designed to strengthen the capabilities of rural fire departments by supporting the purchase of essential equipment, training, and resources necessary for effective emergency response and firefighter safety.
The following departments have been awarded funding:
-
Bungay Fire Brigade (Woodstock) – Grant funding will be used to acquire personal protective equipment (PPE) and two-way radios to enhance both firefighter safety and operational communication.
-
Muddy Brook Fire Department (East Woodstock) – Funding will support critical hydrant repairs, the purchase of updated PPE, and the addition of an electric vehicle emergency response kit to meet evolving safety needs.
-
Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association – The department will use its grant to acquire new turnout gear, ensuring its members are properly protected during fire and rescue operations.
-
Union Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. – Funding will support the purchase of PPE and turnout gear, as well as hazardous materials (hazmat) training to expand the department’s emergency response capabilities.
“These grants are an important investment in the safety and effectiveness of our local fire services,” said Vail. “We are incredibly proud of the dedicated volunteers who serve our communities, and we are grateful that this funding will directly support their mission to protect life and property.”
The VFC Grant Program provides assistance to fire departments serving communities with populations under 10,000, helping ensure that rural departments are not left behind when it comes to modern equipment and essential training.
Congratulations to the Bungay, Muddy Brook, Woodstock Volunteer, and Union Fire Departments for this well-earned recognition and support.
