HARTFORD – Representative-Elect Irene Haines (R-34) has been appointed to three legislative committees. Haines, elected in November to represent the towns of East Haddam, East Hampton and part of Colchester will serve on the Education Committee, Transportation Committee and the Planning and Development Committee.

Her new assignments will begin at the start of the legislative session on January 9th.

“These committee assignments will put me in a strong position to address some of the most important issues facing our towns,” said Haines. “From school funding to infrastructure and regional planning I will be able to advocate for our communities’ interests. I’m looking forward to the start of the legislative session and making sure that the people of East Haddam, East Hampton and Colchester have a strong voice in Hartford.”

The Education Committee works on all matters related to the Connecticut Department of Education and local boards of education.

“Committee work is the engine of our legislative process—it’s when citizens can have their say on issues important to them, and it’s when legislators like Irene Haines make the most difference for the people they serve as bill concepts take shape and are eventually debated,” House Republican Leader Themis Klarides said. “I’m confident that Irene will contribute greatly to conversation here in Hartford during the upcoming legislative session.”

As a member of the Transportation Committee, Haines will work on matters related to the Department of Transportation, including highways and bridges, navigation, aeronautics, mass transit and railroads; and to the State Traffic Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Haines’ work on the Planning and Development Committee will see her work on issues tied to local governments, housing, urban renewal, planning and zoning, economic development, and regional planning.
