STATE REPRESENTATIVES COOK AND CARPINO CELEBRATE PASSAGE OF STEP THERAPY LEGISLATION

Hartford – State Representatives Michelle Cook (D-Torrington) and Christie Carpino (R-Cromwell) are celebrating the passage of legislation that addresses step therapy.

Step therapy occurs when insurance companies require patients to use a cheaper, generic medication before they’ll pay for the medication deemed most appropriate, which may be more expensive. However, this practice can potentially be harmful to individuals who are suffering from illnesses and conditions that need immediate treatment.

The bill requires the automatic override of the step therapy process for various medications prescribed to help treat patients with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, or bipolar disorder within 24 hours after a request is made.

“As we have witnessed, the need for mental health treatment has increased greatly. In many instances, the cost can be even more debilitating than the diagnosis. No one should have to fight the system to stay healthy, especially while battling a severe mental illness. Additionally, individuals should not be forced to start with new medication because of insurance company policy. The health of the patient should always be the priority. This bill assists with eliminating the step therapy required for 5 serious mental illnesses and will not only save money but save lives. I am extremely grateful for the passage of this legislation. I’d like to thank Rep. Carpino for her dedication and partnership in getting this passed,” said Rep. Cook.

“Patient needs should be paramount to health care decisions. This legislation reduces delays and administrative issues that could compromise outcomes. Medical providers and patients should decide what is best and not have to jump through hoops that could delay and impact health care outcomes. Rep. Michelle Cook and I have worked to make this change to help folks we may never meet gain greater access to the medication they need,” said Rep. Carpino.

This bill was included in the biennial state budget.
