Hartford – Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Connecticut has recognized State Representative Christie Carpino (Cromwell/Portland) for her support of critical pieces of legislation that aim to reduce incidences involving drunk driving. MADD is presenting Carpino with a 2016 MADD Public Policy Award as well as coordinating a local event to raise awareness of the dangers associated with drunk driving in the communities she represents.

Carpino was an early proponent of Public Act No. 16-126 “An Act Concerning Child Endangerment While Driving While Under The Influence.” According to MADD, in 2014 over 200 children were killed in alcohol impaired car accidents. More than half of these children were the passenger of the impaired driver responsible for causing the accident. “Public Act 16-126 creates a new provision to address child endangerment while driving impaired. This law establishes a higher level of protection for our children – the most defenseless population in our society,” said Carpino. “In addition, the law includes a provision within the law requiring DCF to administer additional assessments to determine the overall safety of the child and for the department to provide education in cases deemed necessary, such as child parenting courses.”
