Hartford – State Representative Christie Carpino (R-Cromwell) spoke in support of an initiative that would create a state-wide “Kindness Week.” The intent in creating this awareness week is to promote greater civil discourse among Connecticut residents. Carpino was joined by several students  and the Cromwell Children’s Coalition who also testified in support of the bill before the legislature’s Government Administration and Elections Committee.

“There is a lack of civility in the way we interact with each other,” said Rep. Carpino in regard to her support of the new law. “Kindness and respect should be the rule even when we disagree. I’ve initiated bipartisan projects with the Chief Elected Officials in both Cromwell and Portland to show we can disagree but still work together. Passionate disagreements are expected, but at the end of the day it is important to rememeber we are all on the same team.”

Carpino highlighted acts of kindness already happening in her community and their positive impact. The students spent the day learning first hand about the legislative process and testified in support of the initiate to focus on kindness one week each year.  Both students spoke of their own specific initiatives that promote kindness and civility.

“I am proud of the efforts residents in both Cromwell and Portland have made to promote respectful discourse, but Connecticut can do more, ” said Carpino.  The GAE Committee will have until Tuesday, March 25, to take legislative action on this concept and move it forward in the current legislative session.
