HARTFORD – State Rep. Christie Carpino has praised the passage of a proposal she introduced as a promising step in our continued recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. The House of Representatives unanimously passed HB 6643, An Act Concerning Municipal Taxation Assistance Programs and the Municipal Property Tax Waiver, on May 25th.
“I submitted this concept in the hope that it would provide another avenue for municipalities to help those still struggling following this difficult year. This is a targeted approach for a limited time that will give local governments additional flexibility,” said Rep. Carpino.
House Bill 6643 would grant communities the authority to defer tax payments for 90 days or offer lower interest rates on such payments to aid residents. AARP and Cromwell Mayor Faienza both submitted testimony in support during the public hearing process.
The bill awaits passage in the State Senate and Governor Lamont’s signature before it before it can become law.
Update: On June 5th, this bill passed unanimously out of the Senate.
