    Get Fit Challenge

PORTLAND- State Rep. Christie Carpino (Cromwell and Portland) will be participating in the “Get Fit Challenge” sponsored by the Portland Park & Recreation Department.

The “Get Fit Challenge” was initiated by a local resident, Alicia Currier, to help residents get fit before the start summer. The event starts on April 14th and ends June 8th.

Residents can join one of three teams or create their own team. Prizes will be awarded to the top weight loss team and top 3 weight loss individuals with each individual getting a free t-shirt with team color.

Sunday night there will be a kick off for the challenge; Joshua Ramos will lead a Hip Hop Class at Inner Circle Family Martial Arts Center at 6:30pm.

The weigh in times are at the Inner Circle Family Martial Arts Center, 143 Marlborough Street in Portland, Sunday – 6:15 or 7:30pm, Monday – Friday 3:45 or 7:00pm and Saturday -11am. There is a $20 fee per person.

Carpino has been on a mission this year to address the issue of childhood obesity this legislative session by focusing on raising physical activity and promoting outdoor recreation.

According to an American Heart Association study, almost 1 in 4 children does not participate in any free-time physical activity. Additionally, the average American child spends four to five hours in front of the TV, computer or video games every day.

All registrations must go through the Parks and Recreation Office, http://portlandct.org/parkrecdept/pdf/events/2013GetFitChallenge41413.pdf
