HARTFORD- State Representative Christie Carpino (R-32) voted to approve critical updates to the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program, reaffirming her commitment to supporting first responders.

The legislation, Senate Bill 1426, expands the types of cancers covered under the program and authorizes workers’ compensation commissioners to review appeals of denied benefits. Carpino supported the law that established the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program in 2016.

“Connecticut’s firefighters risk their lives daily — but the danger doesn’t end when the flames go out,” said Rep. Carpino. “Expanding the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program is the right thing to do.”

This year’s bill was supported by the CT State Firefighters Association and the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut (UPFFA of CT).  It received unanimous support in both chambers and was quickly signed into law by Governor Lamont.
