Carpino sits on Women’s Discussion Panel

HARTFORD- On February 8th, State Rep. Christie Carpino participated in a Connecticut Woman’s Council panel discussion called: See Jane Run: What It’s Like for Women Who Run for Office.

The panel included State Representative Christie Carpino East Hartford Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc, former State Representative of Stamford and Speaker of the House Moira Lyons and Patricia Russo – President of The Women’s Campaign School at Yale University. Diane Smith, Senior Producer, CT-N & a CWC Board Member served as the panel moderator.

The discussion centered on whether there are still roadblocks for women who run for office? What role does sexism play in committee assignments, leadership roles and how they are treated by their peers?

Carpino was quite candid in her assessment of barriers and opportunities for women in politics. She spoke of her own experiences and encouraged members of the audience to step forward and get involved.

Carpino, in her second term and mother of two small children said, “Women face many challenges and barriers in politics but my message to the women in the audience is that these obstacles can be overcome. If you want to serve your community, do not let someone else define you.”
