(PORTLAND) – On Friday, State Representative Christie Carpino and Sen. Norm Needleman led applause from the General Assembly after securing a $187,500 from the Connecticut State Bonding Commission to help finance the installation of pumps around Jobs Pond, diverting rising groundwater recently causing serious damage to local properties.

“I am grateful to the Bonding Commission for their consideration of this necessary funding,” said Rep. Carpino. “After multiple visits to understand the damage caused by flooding at Jobs Pond, I am hopeful these pumps will be able to offset the rising water so that residents can find relief.”

“I’ve visited Jobs Pond this year knowing the residents nearby are struggling with flooding issues, so it’s excellent and relieving to know the state is committing resources to help solve the problem,” said Sen. Needleman. “I’m grateful to Governor Lamont and the Bond Commission for approving this grant to help people in need.”

Portland First Selectman Ryan Curley added, “The Town of Portland is extremely grateful for all of the support we have received from our partners at the state level regarding the flooding at Jobs Pond. These funds will allow the Town to get this project off the ground and provide relief for those residents impacted.”

The State Bond Commission confirmed the bonding funding on Friday, in response to the advocacy and efforts of the Portland Delegation. Although a start date for the project has not been set, delegation members look forward to sharing more information regarding the timeline of the pump installation in the coming months.

Rep. Carpino added, “I want to thank Governor Lamont and the members of the Bonding Committee for the addition of this necessary funding for Portland on the bonding agenda. Collectively, our work demonstrates our responsiveness to the needs of our residents and our commitment to prioritizing Portland concerns.”
