PORTLAND — State Rep. Christie Carpino today recognized a couple’s efforts to restore a historic barn here on Ames Hollow Road. The 19th century barn, in the family of John and Judy Harper since the 1940s, was once a valuable asset for a farmer who worked the property. Carpino met the couple at their land about noon, where Helen Higgins, executive director of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, described a $5,000 grant the Harpers received to replace post ends, the barn’s siding, windows and their framing. The barn has been a roost for a healthy brown bat colony at a time when the population is declining due to disease. Carpino gave the Harpers a special citation for their efforts to preserve the barn—an enduring symbol of generations past in not only Portland, but also Connecticut.
