CROMWELL- State Rep. Christie Carpino (R-32) was awarded the 2013 Legislator of the Year Award by the Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs during a presentation at Woodside Intermediate School Wednesday afternoon for her work to stop the epidemic of childhood obesity.

The Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs is made up of 23 Corporate YMCAs in Connecticut, with more than 325,000 members.

“I want to thank the YMCA for this recognition. I fully support their high quality school programs; especially with so many parents in the workforce that are unable to be home greet their children right after school. The Kids Korner program encourages children to explore new interests, and to enjoy healthy recreational pursuits. Programs like those put on by the YMCA teach our children healthy habits that will follow them into adulthood,” said Rep. Carpino.

Carpino received the award at Woodside Intermediate School’s YMCA Kids Korner state licensed before and after school program in front of a room full of children excited to meet her.

The YMCA has Kids Korner programs located Edna C. Stevens & Woodside Intermediate School (also serving CMS) in Cromwell and Valley View School (also serving Gildersleeve) in Portland, and at all eleven Middletown Public Elementary Schools.

YMCA Kids Korner has been working in partnership with parents and local school systems to assure that children are safe, and having fun in a supervised and enriching program during the before and after school hours.
