Carpino Named to Bi-Partisan Panel Charged with Helping Towns

HARTFORD- State Rep. Christie Carpino (R-32) has been appointed to serve on the legislature’s newly re-constituted M.O.R.E. (Municipal Opportunities & Regional Efficiencies) Commission, which was first established in 2010.
Carpino, a member of the legislature’s Education committee said, “When done correctly, regional cooperation can help improve government services, create efficiencies and save taxpayers money. I look forward to participating in this bipartisan effort to reach these goals.”
M.O.R.E, establishes task forces headed by a bipartisan and bicameral group of legislators to work on areas identified earlier as being areas where these changes can be made.
The Commission on Municipal Opportunities and Regional Efficiencies (MORE) establishes task forces headed by a bipartisan and bicameral group of legislators who will be tasked with finding a new approach to state and local government in Connecticut that will make our state more economically competitive in the short and long term.
The MORE Commission has working groups to focus on the following four subject areas:
• Municipal Tax Authority
• Board of Education Functions
• Regional Entities
• Mandates
Carpino was appointed by the Speaker of the House to be a member of the MORE commission’s Board of Education Budget sub-committee. The sub-committee’s first meeting was March 14th where the expressed the goals of the commission, the structure of the meetings and how individuals can participate both inside and outside of the building.
“I look forward to hearing from my local Cromwell and Portland boards of education, school administrators and educators on their thoughts on efficiencies,” said Carpino.
With an emphasis on cost efficiency through regional collaboration, the MORE Commission will identify existing costs of local government functions and the possibility of cost savings.
The commission will look at: the many legal obstacles preventing cost saving changes; the regional entities that might carry out those functions more efficiently; and the means of ongoing tracking and evaluating of those initiatives with the goal of producing bipartisan legislative recommendations in phases.
