Carpino, Linares Meet with Portland Library Teen Advisory Board

PORTLAND- State Rep. Christie Carpino and State Sen. Art Linares on April 25 met with several members of the Portland Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB) to discuss legislative topics that are being debated at the State Capitol and issues which are important to young people.
The Portland Library TAB consists of teens interested in getting involved in their library and community. Through monthly meetings, the teens discuss what programs and materials they are interested in having at the library. They volunteer their time in the library with various programs for adults and children.
Carpino said, “I was so impressed with their interest in the issues and working with the teen community. We definitely have leaders in our midst.”
Linares said, “Rep. Carpino and I thought our meeting and discussion was very productive. These students are doing good things for Portland, and we plan to work with them on future projects. We want them to know that their voices matter, that we are listening to them, and that community involvement can change people’s lives for the better.”
Both Linares and Carpino heard from the Portland Library TAB regarding how their organization functions and what are some of the activities the group sponsors. They also discussed how to get more teens involved in the group.
In addition, the Portland Library TAB reviewed some pending legislation at the State Capitol which will come before both Carpino and Linares. The topics covered were: an age restriction on artificial tanning, the accessibility of e-books at libraries and new driving laws to protect vulnerable users of the road and combat distracted driving.
