HARTFORD- State Rep. Christie Carpino (Cromwell & Portland) hailed the defeat of a proposal to shrink the size of drug-free zone surrounding schools, daycares and public housing, from 1,500 feet to 200 feet.

Carpino and other legislators on the Education committee voted down the measure April 24th, with it failing 11-17. Carpino also voted against the measure in Judiciary, both this year on last, and spoke out against the proposal both in committee and on the House floor last session.

“The defeat of this proposal is a win for all children in Connecticut. We should be tough on drug dealers and enforce the current penalties, not send them a message that it’s open season to sell to our children,” said Rep. Carpino.

Carpino was one of the chief opponents of the bill which lessens the enhanced penalties for drug possession and dealing near schools and daycare centers.
