HARTFORD—State Rep. Christie Carpino said today she applauded the decision of the legislature’s Commerce Committee to kill a proposed tax on home heating oil.
H.B. 6650, An Act Concerning Energy Efficiency Programs would have imposed an excise tax of 1.5 cents per gallon beginning July 1. The tax would increase to 2.5 cents in July 2014 and then to 3.5 cents in July 2015. Under the proposal, the money collected would be set aside to fund energy-efficiency programs.
Carpino, who has eight home heating dealers in her district of Cromwell and Portland, contends that the last thing any Connecticut resident needs or wants right now is another tax. She met with several oil dealers to discuss their issues at the end of 2012.
“Being more energy efficient is a good thing. However, adding to the financial burden by increasing fuel costs on those who least can afford it; in order to encourage energy efficiency is the wrong priority,” said Rep. Carpino.
In Cromwell 2,391 homes use home heating oil and 2,860 homes in Portland use home heating oil.
