CROMWELL- State Rep. Christie Carpino and the Cromwell Recreation Department are challenging families to get fit and have some family time fun along the way.

Carpino has been on a two-year campaign to promote physical activity for children to fight childhood obesity in our state and this challenge is another way to get kids active.

    Cromwell Challenge

To register for the ‘The Great Cromwell Challenge’ families can contact the Cromwell Recreation Department at 860-632-3467. Families are encouraged to sign up and make walking a family activity to promote healthy habits. When families sign up, they can choose to make their goal walking to Fenway Park (110 miles), Yankee Stadium (102 miles), or a variety of other goals. They will be given tools and information needed to complete the program.

The program will end on June 1st with Cromwell Day at the New Britain Rock Cats. Cromwell families that have participated will be recognized at the game. The family who logs the most miles will get to throw out the first pitch.

Cromwell Recreation Director Susan Schein said, “When Rep Carpino approached me with this idea, I was very excited. This department loves sponsoring family based activities and staying active throughout our lives is so important. Walking is one of those exercises that we can all do — from young children through our senior years– so we challenge all Cromwell families to join in, walk for health then have a great day together at the Rock Cats.”

The main “kickoff” of ‘The Great Cromwell Challenge’ will be in conjunction with ‘Turn Off the TV Family Fitness Night’ at Woodside Intermediate School on Tuesday, February 11th from 6:30pm. – 7:30pm. Carpino and the Recreation Department will be at a sign-up table.

Woodside Intermediate School PE teacher Mrs. Sarah Turner’s program will have participants rotate through a variety of fitness activities that can be done as a family by joining classes or being done at your own home. Activities will include Yoga, CrossFit, Zumba, and family fitness games. Please e-mail Mrs. Turner at sturner@cromwell.k12.ct.us with the number of participants joining from your family.

Carpino thought with Cromwell Public Schools hosting its very first “No TV Week” during the week of February 10th through 14th, launching the ‘The Great Cromwell Challenge’ seemed like a natural time. Cromwell Public Schools are asking the community put aside television for one week and focus on having fun together. Cromwell Public Schools are encouraging students and their families to pledge not to watch television for the week.
