HARTFORD — Official Veterans’ Day Ceremonies are one step closer to being held at the Rocky Hill Veterans’ Home. A bill sponsored by Rep. Christie Carpino passed unanimously out of the House Chamber, May 30. The bill now moves to the Senate.

House Bill 5110, An Act Concerning A Veterans’ Day Observance At The Rocky Hill Veterans’ Home, will require the state of Connecticut to hold suitable exercises in the Veterans’ Home on November 11, recognizing veterans there for their military service.

“When I first learned that there was no observance on Veterans’ Day at the Rocky Hill Veterans’ home, I was shocked and dismayed, as were my colleagues,” said Rep. Carpino.

“My shock quickly turned to outrage, and I became dedicated to fix this wrong. I proposed this bill on behalf of every veteran in the state, so Connecticut can affirm its support and appreciation of the sacrifices of these brave men and women,” she said.

Recent public hearings were held at the Veterans’ Home on potential improvements for residential services there. Dozens of veterans, residents and public officials, attended and spoke in favor of these much needed changes. A veteran mentioned that the Home did not hold a ceremony on Veterans Day, and Carpino vowed to take action.

“I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in getting this important legislation passed, and everyone who attended our public hearings and testified, on behalf of our state’s veterans,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to a proper observance of Veterans’ Day next year on Nov. 11, at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home,” said Rep. Carpino.

Fittingly, this bill passed, May, 30, as the town of Cromwell held its annual Memorial Day Celebration

Three hundred veterans currently live in the Rocky Hill Veterans Home. It was constructed in 1938 and opened for occupancy in 1940.
