HARTFORD- State Rep. Christie Carpino (Cromwell & Portland) announced that the state Department of Transportation (DOT) will be installing replacing all of the existing signing that is on Route 66 with new signs and additional upgrading Chevron traffic warning signs to the high intensity sheeting in Portland over the few weeks.

Two crashes occurred in the area of Portland known as “the Ledges,” in the fall of last year with the drivers killed in both instances. Some parts of the Ledges are fairly narrow with stone outcroppings on either side of the street, very close to the shoulder. The road in that area is also winding and lacks lighting in some areas.

Carpino has been working with officials at the state Department of Transportation to find ways to mitigate the dangerous nature of the road through signage and speed/DUI enforcement.

Carpino said, “Speed, road conditions, lighting, weather conditions, and fatigue all play a part in the safety of our travelers. We all must be a little more vigilant on our roads.”

A Chevron sign is a traffic warning sign that is placed in road areas with curves or bends. These signs are used to guide and give crucial traffic information to the motorists. They are primarily arrows that are found on rectangular signs. Additionally, DOT will be replacing a number signs to be installed along the full length of Route 66 in the Ledges area of Portland.
