As part of Women’s History Month, I had an opportunity to visit The Bowerbird (Old Lyme, CT), Old Lyme Hardware, and The Chocolate Shell, three local businesses owned and operated by women.
For more than 30 years, the Bowbird has been an Old Lyme staple, offering a wide variety of unique items – from kid’s toys and clothes to locally hand-crafted products, chances are that you are if you are looking for the perfect gift for any occasion, you’re highly likely to find it among their more than 2,000 vendors.
After 26 years in the community, the Talerico family purchased the former Christiansen Hardware store in 2021. A year later it was renamed to Old Lyme Hardware. Owner, Jessica Talerico’s prides herself on offering their customers a more personalized local feel than the larger box stores. In addition to hardware, home & garden, and auto/marine products, they also pay homage to their home state of Michigan by offering uniquely flavored sodas.
Lastly, I made an impromptu stop into the Chocolate Shell to stock up on some of their chocolate truffles and other delicious goodies.
