HARTFORD – A bill co-sponsored by State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) that would provide a tax credit for food or other commodities donated to a qualified organization has unanimously passed through the House.

The legislation would authorize a tax credit for an individual or corporation who produced and donated fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, poultry, and meat in the income year to the Department of Revenue Services (DRS), recognized food banks or emergency feeding organizations in Connecticut. The credit equals 15% of the market value for the items up to $5,000, whichever is less.

Any credit not used in the income year for when it was allowed may carry it over for up to five years until the full credit has been claimed.

“As a huge supporter in helping those in need, this legislation is a win win for both sides involved,” Rep. Ackert said. “Not only does it provide a tax credit for those who volunteer to provide food to those in need, it also ensures that these organizations continue to deliver the essential services many people within our state require.”

In order to qualify for the credit, supported documentation required by the DRS commissioner must be provided.

The bill will now move onto the Senate for further debate.
