Coventry-Vernon – The Coventry and Vernon Police Departments opened their doors this month to State Representative Tim Ackert (R-8) to give him a better understanding of the daily lives of police officers.

“I want to thank the Coventry and Vernon Police Departments for their hospitality,” said Rep. Ackert. “These brave men and wDSC_0135edit omen in blue are dedicated public servants who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. The insight and knowledge that I received will give me a better understanding of legislation that impacts law enforcement officers.”

Rep. Ackert went on two ride-alongs with officers Russ Iger (Coventry) and Jamie Grzegorek (Vernon). Each ride-along lasted four hours during the late shift from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Both officers gave Rep. Ackert a tour of their police departments before hitting the road. Rep. Ackert learned how the officers booked inmates using an automated finger identification system, and how evidence is handled during an investigation.IMG_0759edit

In Vernon, Rep. Ackert had the opportunity to meet K9 Officer Thor and his partner Officer Bryan Sembersky. Officers Grzegorek and Sembersky had Rep. Ackert participate in training exercises with K9 Officer Thor. The training included testing Thor’s ability to detect drugs and track the scent of an individual fleeing the police.

Rep. Ackert said the amount of training that goes into training K9 Officer Thor is truly impressive, and the residents of Vernon should sleep safe knowing that Thor and Officer Sembersky are protecting their community.

“The police officers that are serving our communities are there to protect you and your families,” said Rep. Ackert. “I saw first-hand their dedication to protecting our citizens from individuals looking to break the laws that are in place.”
