DMV Issues Continue…

Last week, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced it will resume charging late fees for overdue emissions testing. DMV temporarily stopped issuing late fees in August 2015 when it installed a new computer system. Approximately 200,000 residents will receive a late fee notice.

The late fee could be due to:

The vehicle owner not having an emissions test on their vehicle.

The vehicle owner having the test more than 30 days past the due date.

The vehicle failed an emissions test and was not retested within 60 days.

If you think you owe an emissions test late fee, you can check by visiting ct.gov/dmv/payemissions. Please wait for your bill before attempting to make a payment.

If you are not aware, this is not the first time the new computer system has caused delays for Connecticut residents. The administration’s failure to properly understand the computer system before rolling it out to the general public continues to waste a significant amount of your tax dollars.

In an effort to provide DMV services to the public in the most convenient and efficient way possible, I proposed legislation to fix the late fee notification process. The bill, H.B. 5944, would require the DMV to mail the emissions notification with the registration renewal. This process would have saved the state time and money and the vehicle owner an unwanted late fee.

I will continue to propose and support common sense legislation to fix the ongoing problems with DMV.
