HARTFORD—A piece of legislation, co-sponsored by State Representative and former Navy Reservist Dave Yaccarino, aimed at helping veterans use and better understand what services are available to them was approved in the House of Representatives this week.
The bill, H.B. 5388, requires towns and cities that don’t have a designated veterans’ advisory committee to appoint a person to help veterans who have questions about services—and for the state’s Department of Veterans Affairs to provide training to that appointee if requested.
“While we try to provide assistance to our veterans with various programs, the system can be confusing and difficult to navigate,” said Yaccarino, the ranking member of the legislature’s Veterans’ Affairs committee. “Adding a point of contact for our veterans will ensure that they are able to avail themselves of the worthwhile opportunities that were created to recognize their service.”
The bill awaits action from the state senate.
Yaccarino represents the 87th district covering North Haven.
