Yaccarino Commends Governor Lamont’s Veto of Housing Bill

HARTFORD–Governor Lamont vetoed the controversial housing bill, 5002, a bill that would have eroded local zoning control of towns across the entire state. State Rep. Dave Yaccarino and the whole of the House Republican Caucus opposed the bill from the start. Governor Lamont is now calling for a special session this fall and has offered no solutions to housing affordability and inventory.

“I commend Governor Lamont for vetoing H.B. 5002. This bill took a top-down approach that would have stripped our towns of the ability to plan responsibly and independently. I voted NO because I believe in local control and in North Haven’s ability to shape its future.

North Haven has consistently taken a thoughtful and balanced approach to growth. We understand our infrastructure limits, we care deeply about protecting our environment, and we’ve made meaningful progress on affordable housing—all without heavy-handed mandates from Hartford.

I support increasing housing opportunities, but those decisions must be made locally, with input from the people who live and work in our communities, rather than being dictated by blanket rules from the state.

H.B. 5002 was the wrong bill at the wrong time. I hope this veto sends a message that real, lasting housing solutions can only come from collaborative, locally driven efforts, not one-size-fits-all legislation that ignores the diverse needs of our towns.”
