State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) has been selected to serve as the leading House Republican lawmaker on the legislatures Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Veteran legislator Yaccarino will also serve on the legislature’s committee on Finance, Revenue and Bonding, Public Safety as well as Technology and Energy. Yaccarino was also appointed a new job as Assistant Republican Leader. His committee responsibilities will begin at the start of the next legislative session on Jan. 7.

“Yaccarino has worked diligently as the Ranking Member on Veterans’ Affairs, I am confident he will continue to help shape important legislation on each of his committee assignments,” said state Rep. Themis Klarides, incoming House Republican Leader. “As a whole, we depend on our ranking and committee members to be our watchdog.”

“Securing basic necessities and shelter for Connecticut’s homeless Veterans is amongst one of the most worthwhile endeavors we could tackle this legislative session,” said Yaccarino. “As Ranking Member of the Veterans’ Committee, I will continue to work together with other legislators to support the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

Gov. Malloy announced a recent projected budget deficit of $44.8 million for the fiscal year 2015. Tackling the budget problems will begin next month.

“The ‘solutions’ implemented in the past have fallen short several times, now we’re facing yet another projected budget deficit going into the 2015 legislative session,” said Yaccarino. “I’ve repeatedly heard from my constituents regarding their concerns with our state’s fiscal condition – now more than ever we need to tackle our budget problems with a new perspective; we must work together for the betterment of all people in the state of Connecticut.”

The Veterans’ Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to military and veterans’ affairs, except veterans’ pensions.

The legislature’s Finance Committee handles the revenue side of the budget, with jurisdiction over all matters related to finance, capital bonding, fees and taxation.

The Public Safety Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to homeland security, the Department of Public Safety, including state police, state organized task force on crime, municipal police training, fire marshals, the fire safety code and the state building code, civil preparedness and legalized gambling, and military and veterans’ affairs, except veterans’ pensions.

The Energy and Technology Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to the Department of Public Utility Control and energy planning and activities.

Veteran legislator Yaccarino is thankful to the people of North Haven for allowing him another opportunity to be their voice in Hartford.
