State Representative Dave Yaccarino was sworn into office yesterday during a ceremony in the crowded Hall of the House of Representatives. Yaccarino, among 17 new Republican representatives sworn in during the opening day of the 2011 legislative session, defeated long-time incumbent Steve Fontana on Election Day by sticking to a common-sense message that resonated with residents in the 87th General Assembly District.

With Connecticut facing high unemployment and a more than $3 billion budget deficit, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle — freshman or not — have their work cut out for them. It was a topic covered by House Republican Leader Larry Cafero as he addressed roughly 140 state legislators, most of them flanked by family and friends. Cafero recited a couple of the common sense principles that drove so many voters to choose Republicans when they voted for state representative in November. Statewide, House Republicans picked up 14 seats — the biggest gain by any caucus in at least two decades. Connecticut shouldn’t borrow more than it can afford to pay back, Cafero said, and it shouldn’t spend more money than it takes in.
