North Haven, CT – August 22, 2013 – State Senator Len Fasano and State Representative David Yaccarino helped Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, celebrate the 10th anniversary of its student internship program in Connecticut at Covidien’s North Haven facility on August 15.  As the largest paid medical technology internship program in the state, Covidien’s program has included more than 500 students, with 66 intern graduates hired to full-time positions, in the past decade.

“Like Connecticut, our future is focused on innovation,” said Bryan Hanson, Group President, Surgical Solutions, Covidien.  “Our Company invested more than $450 million in R&D in 2012 and plans to launch more than 50 healthcare products over the next two years.  Our interns work on various aspects of the innovation process, collaborating as part of a Covidien team to learn firsthand how to turn great ideas into solutions that improve patient outcomes and lower the overall cost of healthcare.”

This year’s graduating class includes 74 interns, most of whom come from cities and towns across the state and attend universities in Connecticut.  They are part of a larger company program, which employed more than 220 summer interns at Covidien locations across the U.S.

Over the years, the majority of interns in the program have worked at Covidien’s research and development (R&D) and manufacturing operations in New Haven and North Haven.  The combined locations form the global headquarters for Covidien’s $5 billion, 10,000 person Surgical Solutions business.  The program’s success would not have been possible without the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), which provided grant funding in 2006 and 2007 that helped institutionalize the program and include more students focused on technology and manufacturing disciplines.
