Rep. Yaccarino, joined by Senator Fasano and two New Haven legislators, donned a hardhat and safety vest for a first-hand look at Sims Metal Management on Universal Drive in North Haven recently.
After a meeting with company representatives, including general manager John Sartori, the legislators took a guided tour to see how the company operates in the state. Sims Metal management is the world’s largest publicly traded metal and electronics recycler, with more than 250 facilities on five continents. Sims Metal Management operates three facilities in Connecticut- North Haven, New Haven and Stamford- and operates shredders, shears and balers to process and recycle all types of metal.
As with other North Haven businesses Rep. Yaccarino has recently toured, Connecticut’s energy costs were mentioned as one of the major difficulties of operating in the state. However, company officials praised the legislature’s attempts to level the playing field for all scrap metal dealers with programs to reduce theft.
