Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) today honored organ and tissue donors and recipients during a ceremony marking National Donate For Life Month at the State Capitol.
More than 100 people converged in the North Lobby of the Capitol for the event which featured speakers, displays and heartfelt stories from families of organ donors and recipients.
“Organ and tissue donation are important issues that are oftentimes overlooked in our busy lives,” Rep. Yaccarino said. “Being able to give someone else a chance at life is an incredible opportunity. It’s important to make your sure your family knows your intent so they’re not faced with making the decision during difficult circumstances.”
According to Donate For Life Connecticut, more than 8,000 deceased donors provided more than 22,000 organ transplants. In addition, there were nearly 7,000 transplants from living donors. There are approximately 30,000 tissue donors and 40,000 cornea donors annually, providing more than 1 million tissue and cornea transplants.
More than 100,000 men, women and children currently await organ transplants.
“I signed up to be an organ and tissue donor during the event and encourage everyone to talk to their loved ones and consider making the pledge as well.”

Also honored at the event were the winners of Donate For Life Connecticut’s 21st Annual High School Poster Contest Awards. The first place award went to North Haven High School’s Alex Adesso and the Tony Award was given to North Haven High’s Melissa Sardilli. Also honored were 2nd place winner James Walwer of Guilford High School and 3rd place winner Jowena Cheng of Fairfield Ludlowe High School.
