Rep. Yaccarino Comments on Gov. Malloy’s Proposed Budget

Rep. Yaccarino said today he was encouraged Gov. Malloy was seeking $1 Billion in concessions from state employee unions, his effort to get more rescission authority and his stated goal of changing the Education Cost Sharing formula to make it more equitable for towns across the state but the North Haven legislator remained concerned the proposals don’t go far enough to cut state spending.
Yaccarino said the Governor’s proposal spends $900 million more over the next two years, and increases on income and sales taxes of $1.5 billion will fall squarely on the middle class who are already under enough pressure in this economic crisis.
“Increases in spending and tax hikes are not what the people of Connecticut need, they need jobs” Rep. Yaccarino said. “Connecticut can’t afford dozens of new taxes, businesses across the state will be forced to reduce staff or close their doors altogether with these proposals and that will reduce employment across the state.”
Rep. Yaccarino noted neighboring states are making tough decisions and cutting the size and scope of state government without calling for higher taxes.
“I applaud the Governor for putting forth a budget without gimmicks and borrowing,” Rep. Yaccarino said. “However, I don’t think he went far enough with spending cuts before he decided to raise taxes to historic levels across the board.”
