This afternoon, I joined State Representative Jill Barry for a tour of Big Y World Class Market in Marlborough to learn first-hand about their operations, family-based values, and challenges they face doing business in Connecticut.

The company, which is extremely invested in the local communities they’re a part of, pride themselves on working alongside local farmers and vendors to not only promote their products but stock their shelves with their merchandise. Additionally, items approaching their expiration dates are donated to Foodshare organizations or placed into barrels and donated to local farmers as feed for their livestock.

One of their biggest challenges of operating in the state is labor related costs. Energy costs are also an issue, but they do everything they can to control those costs by using efficient lighting, etc.

Special thanks to the Big Y team who met with us during our visit.
