Rep. Polletta: We Have A “Shared Interest” In Increasing Affordable Housing Stock in Connecticut

HARTFORD – On Tuesday, March 7th, State Representative Joe Polletta (R-68) attended the final meeting of the General Assembly’s Housing Committee in advance of their March 9th Joint Favorable deadline. The Tuesday meeting agenda listed Rep. Polletta’s proposal, HB 1050 An Act Establishing Task Forces To Study The Effects Of Evictions On Landlords And Rent Stabilization Policies, as first to be considered.
On the proposed task force, Rep. Polletta said, “The pandemic induced a freeze on evictions and that decision left housing providers out of consideration. These policies have inflamed the housing stock shortage that exists in Connecticut and now, it is necessary for us to explore the effects of the eviction freeze on property managers so we can carefully craft legislation going forward.”
The task force will be a bipartisan group consisting of legislators from both chambers, a representative from the Housing Commissioner’s office, the Commissioner of Economic and Community Development’s Office, and community members representing tenants and housing providers.
“We are committed to two main goals: 1) Solving Connecticut’s housing shortage crisis and 2) Supporting housing providers to build a strong economy,” Rep. Polletta said. “Together, we can help build a stronger economy with a thriving affordable housing market with smart legislation.”
Rep. Polletta’s initiatives to increase Connecticut’s affordable housing stock include creating incentives for housing providers to voluntarily partner with the public sector to build affordable units with terms that will prioritize consistency and affordability.
HB 1050 was joint favorable to the Housing Committee at the March 7th meeting and will be filed with the Legislative Commissioners’ Office, awaiting further action from the General Assembly.
