Rep. Polletta Joins Juvenile Crime Forum in Watertown

Rep. Polletta Joins Juvenile Crime Forum in Watertown

On Wednesday, December 15, 2021, Rep. Polletta will police officials, area legislators, and Watertown Police Chief Josh Bernegger in attending a Juvenile Crime Forum at Watertown Town Hall (Council Chambers), located at 61 Echo Lake Road in Watertown.

As part of the forum, panelists will discuss changes needed to the justice system because of escalating juvenile crime in the area.

“The Greater Waterbury community, including Watertown, has seen a recent string of car thefts, shootings, and other violent crimes that have impacted the safety of our residents,” said Rep. Polletta. “Following the death of a woman on the Route 8 off-ramp and a drive-by shooting in the Kimberly Lane neighborhood of Watertown, this forum is an opportunity to bring community members and neighbors together to discuss ideas on how to improve safety.”

This stark rise in juvenile crime has alarmed residents from towns and cities throughout the state. Car break-ins, car jackings, stolen vehicles and other property related crimes are being committed by juveniles who, when caught, display little fear of prosecution. For many homeowners and property owners, these crimes are personal, with many feeling like their voices aren’t being heard. Law enforcement officers have testified that they feel like their hands are tied, and juveniles are being released as quickly as they’re apprehended. Something must be done. Silence and denial are not the answer. It is important that we offer a platform to have this community conversation.
