State Representative Joe Polletta (R-68), Ranking Member of the legislature’s Housing Committee, worked with members on both sides of the aisle to secure passage of S.B. 261, An Act Concerning Recommendations by the Department of Motor Vehicles, which passed the House during a legislative session on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

Rep. Polletta hailed final passage of the bill that seeks to encourage new residents to register their vehicles within 30 days. Namely, sections 30-32 of the legislation addresses the issue of individuals using out-of-state plates, rather than registering in-state in order to avoid paying motor vehicle taxes in Connecticut.

During the start of the 2021 Legislative Session, Rep. Polletta co-sponsored H.B. 6569, An Act Concerning Motor Vehicle Registration, which was merged into S.B. 261.

“For a long time in the greater Waterbury area we have had a problem with out-of-state plates not registering their vehicles in a timely manner. I’m pleased to see this bill win approval from the House and Senate, and I thank all parties involved in the Transportation Committee for their support, the Department of Motor Vehicles for their willingness to work on this important initiative, and for the bipartisan support in the passage of this legislation,” Rep. Polletta said.

The bill was originally approved by the Senate on Thursday, June 3, 2021, and now heads to the governor’s desk for further action. The 2021 legislative session adjourns at midnight on Wednesday, June 9.
