Rep. Polletta Advocates for “Renaissance Districts”

During a public hearing in front of the Planning and Development Committee, State Representative Joe Polletta (R-68) yesterday testified in favor of legislation he proposed to allow a study on cities and towns creating entertainment districts within their community.
Rep. Polletta spoke on behalf of HB 5183 – An Act Requiring a Study of the Planning, Development and Financing of Municipal Entertainment Districts – which would facilitate the possible creation of entertainment, or “renaissance districts,” in downtown areas where multiple arts and cultural sites are present, including Watertown.
“Allowing towns and cities to create an area with targeted, specific attractions can increase traffic to those local businesses and help create a vibrant arts and culture scene which will potentially boost the entire local economy,” Rep. Polletta said. “The proposed legislation would study the issue and does not mandate any town establish such a district, but would allow each municipality to decide for themselves if the plan would be viable within their community.”
A similar bill was proposed last year but failed to make it through the committee process.
“Watertown, as well as so many of our other towns in Connecticut, hosts a thriving Main Street with numerous businesses. Through the eventual creation of these districts, it is my hope these neighborhoods will grow and allow for more out-of-town visitors to explore and experience our towns. This growth will also be bolstered by tax incentives for art and cultural sites, further enhancing the experience and the districts,” Rep. Polletta said.
The legislative session ends at midnight on Wednesday, May 9.
