Stratford Legislators Applaud Funding Grants for Before and After-School Programs

HARTFORD – State Representatives Ben McGorty (R-122), Laura Hoydick (R-120), Terry Backer (D-121), and Senator Kevin Kelly (R-21) today hailed the unveiling of grant funds to support before and after-school programs at the Harry B. Flood Middle School and the David Wooster Middle School in the amount of $180,000.
The grants for the two Stratford schools are part of $4 million in funding statewide for before and after-school programs in addition to $800,000 for expanded learning time. The funds are directly aimed at increasing performance at the targeted school.
“This grant is terrific news for Stratford,” said Rep. McGorty. “It will mean a significantly expanded capacity to provide meaningful programs before and after school to Stratford students, and give the students new opportunities to enjoy learning.”
“There is tremendous value in having structured opportunities for students outside the normal hours of instruction,” said Rep. Hoydick. “These grant funds will allow for these two Stratford schools to provide quality programs that will ultimately enhance student performance.”
“I applaud Governor Malloy’s continued commitment to Stratford,” said Rep. Backer. “The state’s goal of universal pre-K and after school options is well within reach.”
“All children deserve to have a safe and supportive environment outside of the classroom,” said Senator Kelly. “This funding will help establish programs that can provide a comfortable and educational place for our kids both before and after school. I applaud efforts to provide more academic opportunities to local students and meet the vital needs of our children.”
The grants were made as part of the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, which aims to provide high quality programs for children outside regular school hours.
