HARTFORD – On Thursday, State Representative Ben McGorty sided with parents in Shelton, Stratford, and Trumbull by voting to ensure their individual right to opt out of school mask mandates.
“I was proud to stand with parents of Shelton, Stratford, and Trumbull by casting a NO vote to extend the governor’s Executive Orders, including the statewide mask mandate in schools,” Rep. McGorty said. “After two exhausting years, it is clear that residents throughout Connecticut are tired of the ‘government by experts’ which has abandoned the rights of parents and individuals to perpetuate a continuous state of emergency, one which no longer exists in Connecticut.”
“The data continues to prove the ineffectiveness of face masks in curbing the transmission of COVID in schools. The detrimental impact on children of wearing a face mask for up to 10 hours per day is well-documented and continues to evolve.”
“While the governor has announced that he intends to lift the statewide school mask mandate on February 28th, I am disappointed that our proposed amendment, which allowed parents to opt out of local and state school mask mandates, ultimately failed in the House. I have heard from countless parents, children, and educators who are united in their calls to prioritize the mental, physical, and emotional development of our children by ending these harmful mandates.”
